How to Install Well Lights

You’ve worked hard to make your clients’ homes beautiful. At the end of the day, they want to relax and appreciate the space you’ve created. Installing well lights in their landscaping is one way to highlight your work and make their space usable night or day.

How to Install LED Well Lights

Well lights are recessed landscape lighting that emphasize plants or structural elements in a yard, like a new fountain or favorite oak tree. They also provide nighttime lighting so your clients can enjoy their outdoor space safely after dark. Brilliance LED offers a variety of elegant and durable well lighting to enhance the outdoor living experience. After you choose a suitable location, you can prepare to install the well lights.

Materials

In addition to your light fixtures, you’ll need the following items:

  • Shovel or post hole digger
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Rake
  • Pea gravel
  • Mulch
  • Garden hoe
  • Screwdriver
  • Power drill
  • 4-inch PVC sleeve

You can install lights without the PVC sleeve, but installing the light into a sleeve gives a more professional look and prevents the light from being knocked out of place accidentally.

Installation Steps

Once you’ve assembled all your materials, you can install your client’s well lights.

  1. Use your rake to clear the area of mulch or other obstacles. Mark the spot where you plan to place the light. It should be at least 12 inches from any wall.
  2. With a shovel or post hole digger, create the hole. If your client’s yard holds moisture, make sure the hole is at least 10 to 12 inches deep.
  3. Thread your wire through the PVC sleeve and place the body of the light inside.
  4. Lower the sleeve and light down into the hole. The top of the sleeve should be at least three inches above the ground.
  5. Fill in around the PVC sleeve with pea gravel. Using the gravel will provide drainage so water and moisture will not build up around the light fixture. Check to see if the sleeve is level and adjust as necessary.
  6. Connect the wire inside the sleeve to the fixture wire.
  7. Add extra soil around the fixture and tamp it down. Check that your PVC sleeve and fixture remain level.
  8. There should still be 2 to 3 inches between the fixture and the ground. You can replace the mulch you raked away at the beginning of the process. When you’re finished, the bottom of the fixture should be level with the mulch.
  9. Loosen the screws on the fixture and remove the top and rubber seal carefully to prevent any dirt from falling into the light. Install your lamp in the socket.
  10. Return the top of the fixture to its place and gently screw it back on. Do not over-tighten the screws.

Benefits of Installing LED Well Lights

You have many choices for bulbs for well lights, but LED lights provide brightness at lower power. LED lighting has fewer parts to break down over time, so it is also durable for long-term use. Brilliance LED offers a wide selection of low voltage LED products for your clients’ landscape lighting needs.
